IWOSC’S ANNUAL AGENTS PANEL
Agents Update 2012:
What Writers Must Know About Finding & Working with Representation Today

Monday, April 30, 2012

In a changing marketplace, it’s more important than ever to have an advocate to fight for you when going the route of traditional publishing. Our April program will present a panel of stellar Southern California agents and a prominent literary attorney who will provide a look at their world today. We’ll cover what you need to know to find the right representative, how to get their attention, and the steps you should take to create the strongest relationship. In addition, we’ll look at the ebook factor, transitioning from self-publishing to traditional publishing, book-to-film deals, and phone apps. We also have a top manager of scriptwriters and directors, as well as a veteran author/screenwriter to share their insider insights. Come join us!

Our panelists include:

SUSAN FINESMAN, FINE LITERARY , is a literary agent who now specializes in introducing great writers first to publishers, and then as part of a coordinated plan pursuing film, TV, and Internet opportunities. She began scouting books, plays, and narrative nonfiction for Tri-Star Pictures in 1986. Five years later, she moved on to Savoy Pictures, followed by a long and award-winning stint at HBO, where highlights included an Emmy for Ernest Gaines’s A Lesson Before Dying. For fiction, she looks for characters she cannot shake. For nonfiction, she is interested in lifestyle and cookbooks.

In January 2006, Ross left to form his own company, Silent R Management. Today, after 12 years in the business, Ross can boast a hot slate of writer and director clients as a manager. In 2011, Ross sold one of the biggest specs of the year: Father Daughter Time: A Tale of Armed Robbery and Eskimo Kisses by long-time client Matthew Aldrich. Writer Beware!

Monday, March 26, 2012

"Don't trust anyone," goes the longtime maxim of Hollywood and New York publishing. Yet today, writers have to trust their material and ideas to dozens of people -- agents, acquisitions editors, self-publishing and marketing professionals, and more. How can a writer tell "the wheat from the chaff"? How can we be sure that we won't get ripped off? And how can we best present ourselves -- and avoid common mistakes -- in the first place? In this intensive panel seminar, we'll be giving advice on the successful practices -- and dangerous pitfalls -- that await writers, especially in the current Brave New World of publishing and marketing. We've drawn a stellar panel from all aspects of the publishing business, from conventionally published authors who have worked with agents and trade houses, to self-publishing experts and gurus, to grammar and publicity coaches, to a top LA attorney specializing in contract and business law.

Among other topics, we'll be discussing things like:

  • Grammar, Email, and query letter dos and don'ts

  • How best to present and comport yourself -- and how NOT to -- with agents, editors, and in marketing your book

  • What to expect -- and what NOT to -- from editors, book coaches, publicists, and literary agents

  • Books and intellectual property in the online world -- what are the "can's" and "can'ts"? And what about the scourge of "idea theft?"

  • The publishing process -- what happens AFTER the book is sold?

  • Contract and legal do's and don'ts -- what to look for, and what to AVOID -- in contracts with agents, publishers, and in self-publishing/POD.

  • Legitimate agents and editing services vs. scam artists (fee chargers, "Edit Ink" type fraud editing "services", and the like.) How can you tell if an agent or editor is "legit"?

  • And what about self-publishing and print-on-demand (POD)? How can a writer tell what venues are "for real," and which ones are just scam "vanity publishing houses" with no plans for their authors -- except to take their money?

And while we cannot offer "free legal advice" on individual cases, we'll be featuring all that and much more, plus Q&A and networking with our expert panelists.

The panel includes:

Our own FLO SELFMAN and ROBERTA EDGAR, principals of the premier editing and consulting service, Words à la Mode (www.wordsalamode.com), in addition to being President and Vice President, respectively, of IWOSC.

ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING: It’s not your father’s publishing world

Monday, February 27, 2012

The changing world of publishing has struggled with the yin and yang of traditional vs. avant garde. Now the newer forms of publishing are gaining a foothold in an ever-increasing percentage of the market.

Electronic publishing and POD (Print on Demand) have provided smaller publishers with low-cost alternatives and a new marketplace. The big publishers are agonizing over this, trying to cope, and playing catch-up with the smaller concerns.

It's easier than ever to get onto the bandwagon, and even though the changes are still upon us daily, once you're in the electronic market, it is increasingly simple to upgrade to accommodate the new rules and methods and navigate the growing competition.

We will discuss the ins and outs, the methods, marketing and reasons to go electronic. And we will endeavor to keep it simple and show you a real, creative, and inexpensive way to get your word out.

IWOSC SATURDAY SEMINAR
Itching To Pitch

Saturday, April 28, 2012
Most writers are afraid to pitch. This workshop is about taking the fear out of pitching and presenting your project as a best-seller, no matter what it is.

A pitch is a writer’s audition, and presentation is just as important as the material. “Itching to Pitch” is geared for the petrified pitcher. Writers will learn what they need to know for a successful interview.

Pitches need to be clear and concise. Presenter Dee J. Adams endorses using five index cards and will delineate what should be on each card. Ms. Adams will also talk about rehearsal beforehand and what to wear.

Body language of both writer and editor is extremely important, and she will explain how it affects a pitch. Finally, she will cover strategies for handling unexpected situations, like the not-so-enthusiastic editor, getting tongue-tied, limited pitch time, etc.

This workshop, geared toward fiction, is also beneficial to writers of memoirs, nonfiction, or anyone pitching a project. The four-page handout includes the contents of the five cards; examples; a complete list of “Do’s and Don’ts,” elevator pitches, and appointment etiquette. This pitch structure also helps in creating a brief synopsis or blurb for your project.

With “Itching to Pitch,” anyone can get a request for a submission. It’s all in the execution.

PUBLICISTS: When, How and Why?

Saturday, February 18, 2012

It is increasingly easy to do your own publicity, up to a point. The problem is that there really are not enough hours in the day to learn and research all of the possibilities, and definitely not enough time in the day to implement in an optimized fashion.

Successful placement of publicity is never a guarantee, but if you use a professional, a person who is known by the target media, you have an advantage. And this is one area where the time saved can be translated into dollars saved.

We will discuss what publicists do, what they cannot do, why they help, and how to work with them today.

Presenters:

Her clients include The Antaeus Company, Circle X Theatre Co., Ensemble Studio Theatre/LA, The Fountain Theatre, L.A.
