Write On!

Always on —
   Write On!

"Write On!"
IWOSC's very own Internet radio program
.

Words of wit and wisdom from IWOSC member writers are always online for you in our one-hour weekly radio show.

All shows include tips about how to make your writing life better.

Use & bookmark the link above or search for IWOSC at BigMediaUSA.com.

IWOSC — Independent Writers of Southern California — provides writers with several opportunities to get together with other writers each month. We have casual satellite get-togethers in various areas; we have a seminar most months, and we have a general meeting that is typically a panel discussion about a writing-related topic.

Many of our members are published professionals or professional writers of other sorts, while others are working on breaking into the professional writing scene. Some write books, others write for magazines, others do public relations....

If you're a writer, at any level, in any genre, we invite you to come check us out.

General Meeting:
“The End of the Music World As We Know It
(and what to do about it!)”

Monday, January 26
7:30 to 9 p.m.

The death of the music industry has been widely reported, but what’s the truth for writers? With the cutbacks at newspapers and other paper-based publications, both music writers and promoters have had to look for new venues for their work—on the internet and elsewhere. Moderated by James E. Fowler, panel members will discuss what's out there, what's not, what works, and what doesn't. Early confirmed participants include Casey Dolan, former pop music writer at the Los Angeles Times and current contributor to the blog "International Review of Music."

Moderator: Moderator James E. Fowler.

Seminar:
Interviewing 101, with KPCC’s Kitty Felde

Saturday, January 24
10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Does the thought of a microphone in your face turn your knees to jelly? Hate interviewing someone else to research your play or other project? How do you prepare? How do you handle handlers? How do you get close-mouthed people to open up? What is off the record? Never fear. “Interviewing 101” is on tap.

Intensive Writing Workshop

For more than two years, IWOSC has held an Intensive Writing Workshop with Oliver Mayer, Ph.D., associate professor of Dramatic Writing at USC.
While Mayer develops two theater projects this winter, he leaves the group in the capable hands of co-moderator Alice Campbell Romano.
Mayer plans to resume his role as moderator for the workshop in the spring.
The workshop meets the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays of the month at 7:30 p.m. in Westwood.

Adopt a book

IWOSC has a longstanding tradition of supporting the Los Angeles Public Library.
In 1986, when an arson fire destroyed 400,000 volumes, and damaged countless more books, periodicals and other materials in Downtown's iconic 1926 Bertram Goodhue-designed Egyptian Revival-style Central Library, IWOSC members jumped in, rolled up their sleeves, and helped out.

As IWOSC celebrates its quarter century of supporting writers and the writing life in Southern California, we are again calling upon our members and friends to dig in and help the Library, this time by adopting much-needed books.

To adopt a book...
download this form, print it, and either bring it to us or mail it to us using the address on the form.
(To download, right-click and choose the download option.)

Thank you for supporting the LA Public Library through IWOSC!

Be part of Write On! — IWOSC's own radio show

IWOSC members have the opportunity to be a part of the show. These are 5-6 minute taped interviews as part of our one-hour weekly radio show.

Write On! is produced by Big Media Broadcasting Company (BMBC) in Studio City.

Your interview can be a great promotional tool:
It can be accessed on demand 24/7 on BigMediaUSA.com.
It may be downloaded and placed on your own website free of charge.
You may also send a link to your own mailing lists.

To set up an interview, email the following items to

1) One small digital head shot to be used for the web page advertising the shows.

2) A brief list of questions for the interviewers to ask you (interviewers may digress from the question list).

3) A 50-word bio.

When a taping is scheduled, bring the book being promoted.

Writers will be contacted to arrange tapings based on availability.

The 2008 annual IWOSC Summer Party at the Heritage Square Museum in Highland Park gave us a great opportunity to rub elbows with fellow writers in a unique historic setting. If you missed it, you'll have a similar opportunity at our annual Winter Party. All of our parties give you the chance to know a place of interest in the LA area.
